by Wayne Liew on February 21, 2009

Today, I am going to introduce a new segment on Wayne Liew Dot Com called Weekly Biz Buzz. As a solo blogger and a college entrepreneur, I have to admit that I can’t provide you with ALL the timely tips and happenings that are related to entrepreneurship and small business.

Buzz and Trends

Weekly Biz Buzz will be posted on every Saturday. It will provide you with updates about my progress as an entrepreneur as well as interesting resources that I have found over the week. I am sure that these links are great weekend reads for you.

I don’t want to waste any of your weekend time so let’s get started!

Also, I wrote a blog post covering business competitors and how to make competition irrelevant for your venture. Read the blog post at 7 Kick Ass Ways to Make Competition Irrelevant and be sure to leave your comment. :)

For the coming weeks, I will also introduce a segment called “Entrepreneur Interviews”, which I will feature interviews with entrepreneurs and small business owners. These interviews are likely to include details about the running of their business, entrepreneurship and their motivating factors.

Track Search Engine Positions Using Exact Factor

Exact Factor is a great tool that I came across this week. In a nutshell, it offers tracking for your search engine keyword ranking positions on Google. You can even track how well your competitors are doing with the search terms that you are targeting.

ExactFactor

What I like about the service is that they will send you notifications if your site reaches a particular ranking, such as the Top 5. However, I find some inaccuracy with some search terms that I am tracking. If you want to check this tool out, visit Exact Factor today. This tool is completely FREE!

Do You Have A Business Site?

If your answer is no, you may want to cheer because you are one of the 44% of business owners that don’t have a web site. Seriously, are you cheering? Businesses and companies, even if you are just a small entity, should create an online presence for yourself.

People are getting online and I am sure that your target market is getting online as well. A business site does not only grant you credibility, it creates a venue for web users to drop by after reading or hearing about you from others.

The Internet is not meant for businesses targeting international markets only. This is a big myth. You are able to promote your site to locals as well using geographical search engine optimization, social media marketing, word of mouth marketing and contextual advertising.

Corporate Blogging: Why Business Owners Hold Back

David Peralty came up with an interesting blog post, The Psychology Behind Corporate Blogging, this week. It explains some of the major reasons why business owners and corporate executives are unwilling to spend time and effort in blogging.

With only 16% of the people trust company blogs, I can understand why blogging is something that businesses and companies want to stay away from. However, I would like to highlight that the reason why people don’t trust company blogs is because most of the blogs did it the wrong way.

Yes, blogging is a tool for marketing and branding but constantly doing so on your company blog will drive people away. Useful content and interaction with readers should be the core of a company blog. Here are the 10 Benefits for Businesses to Start Blogging.

Blog Contents that Always Generate Buzz

Adam Singer posted 45 Blog Post Ideas That Always Generate Buzz and it got my attention. The article is definitely a must read for small business owners that has a blog or planning to have one.

After reading this article, I hope you understand that you can get attention for your business, products and services without constantly promoting them on your blog. Content is the key of a blog and you should make your business blog the key platform of interaction with your online target market.

Share Your Content with Me!

With that, I would like to round this week off with an invitation to all entrepreneurship and small business bloggers out their to tell me about your blog (if you have one) in the comment section.

If you are a business owner, what are the things that you have implemented this week and paid off well? Share with me in the comment section as well.

  • Hey David,

You're welcome. That's a cool concept and by the way, thanks for sharing another site of yours here (never knew about it). Subscribed to your RSS feed.
  • Thank you for the mention. I really appreciate it. Great biz buzz. :) I am working with many business clients right now that are or want to get into blogging, so I hope to write more articles about their experiences, if they'll let me. ;)
  • So many small businesses simply don't understand the ROI that comes from blogging.

1 of the biggest barriers I have seen with blogging is when people say "I am not a writer". I used to think this way also but then I realized I should blog like I talk. Once I realized that it became easy. But again so many people don't think they can do that. Frustrating haha.
  • I think when they hear about social media marketing or blogging, the first thing that will come to their mind is the measurement. They don't realize that unlike their usual ROIs, social media marketing uses a set of totally different metrics.

Actually, most business owners don't realize that it is better not to be a writer. If you are not a good writer, you can present yourself better in front of your audience. Thus, a blogger doesn't need to be a good writer.
