In my last post “How To Earn With CPM ads?” JiNG from Access Granted asked me this question, “How Nuffnang ads work?” I will write a full explanation and my review of Nuffnang Malaysia here.

I now shamelessly posting my Nuffnang stats to help me explain much more easily.

As you can see, Nuffnang is offering two kinds of ads with its ad panels. One will be CPC ads and one will be the CPM ads. CPC ads are easy and are widely known, you get clicks, and you will get your money.

Nuffnang CPM ads work in a rather different way which your earnings are calculated based on the number of uniques a week before an advertiser chose your blog to have their ads published.

Nuffnang also uses a system which is discrete from us that grade your ad panels, which the grading is termed “Band”. If your ad placement is high up and the number of uniques is high you will get a high “band”. Stop laughing… I know I’m a noob with Band 2 but it’s with my old blog!

My reviews on Nuffnang after the jump.

Nuffnang pros
Many advertisers chose Nuffnang to publish their ads and their advertisers include famous brands like Nike, Nokia, Hitz.fm and so on which will make you proud and give you the chance to show off if you have these big name advertisers on your blogs.

Their payout is set at RM50, which is half of their main rival, Advertlets. It seems to be quite easy to reach but you will need to put in some efforts to buff up your uniques.

Their ads are attractive and it will definitely add some colours to your blogs. I somehow like the design of their ads because of the animation. How nice will it be if these ads are in CPC, I am sure we can earn a lot.

Nuffnang cons
I am using them but I’ve got to admit this. Nuffnang ad panels load very slowly. They can sometimes be the last to show their ads after all the other contents shows up. This maybe is just for me but I’ve heard that many complaints about the speed of their ad panels.

The second problem which I came across with Nuffnang is that their ads or system will be down for some system upgrades or maintenance. When this happened, my whole sidebar will stop right at where my Nuffnang ad placement is. Although they have had improvement on this matter, I would still recommend that you have your sidebar with Nuffnang ads being the last to load and most importantly, let your content loads first!

Although they were high-profile blogs using them like Kennysia and Aunty Lilian, bloggers with little traffic will shy away from Nuffnang because of the slow pace in earnings and the unavailability of advertisers that will choose their blogs.

These are what I think about Nuffnang and I am only earning about MYR5.00+ with them, which is way behind what I am earning with Advertlets. What you guys think about them after they are in the frame for such a long time? For those who removed or are not in Nuffnang yet, do you want to join or rejoin them? Tell me about what you think and let’s just hope someone from Nuffnang will hear your voices. :-)

Well…Nuffnang had given me the first advertisement ever since their very first campaign, though not regular, I am more satisfied with them. I tried Advertlets and was disappointed, therefore I removed them.

Nuffnang has been trying to attend to everyone’s feedback, this is what I like about their team. They have improved a lot compared to when they first started. Timothy and the gang have been helpful enough when I screwed up my ad banners.

Even though I am not eligible to cash out my earnings yet (only low band), I am still happy with Nuffnang because I actually benefited from it, eg. I get to watch free movies. Well, the boss’s attitude and the way he carries himself reflects on his company. Don’t want to comment further on this department but I got 3 words to sum it all: I love Nuffnang! :)

May I know why are you disappointed with Advertlets?

I know that Nuffnang support is very friendly and they are quite good in interacting with their members. I can’t do a comparison on this because they both seems to be helpful when I have inquiries.

I missed out all of the activities because of me myself, no one to blame. A fan of Timothy I guess… I like them in some way but not love like you… :-)

nuffnang support has been very helpful and with personal touch… and i think advertlets are a bit too commercialized.

as money generating wise, currently, earning few cents from advertlets and none from nuffnang… now waiting nuffnang to serve CPM ads…

How do you differentiate between a cpc and cpm nuffnang ads?

    @ clement
Why? Is it possible that your ad placement irritates your readers?

    @ pikey
I agreed with that but not to say Advertlets is to commercialised, they are good in marketing their brand.

I can tell you that your wait will be worth it. That is why I am putting Nuffnang ad panels.

    @ qing87
If it is a CPM ads, you will be sent an e-mail from Nuffnang notifying you that there will be an incoming ad for you. If it is a CPC, it will just appear even though you don’t get a mail. :-)

hmm i’m using nuffnang more, but i haven’t tried out advertlets seriously myself though… haha. yurp both have their pros and cons, i guess it’s just the matter of your own choice. :) personally to me nuffnang has a friendlier outlook to me though, maybe it’s the logo hehe…

and yeah, agree that nuffnang had to work on the ads, sometimes they load kinda slow. maybe it’s because they’re flash/moving images thats why they’re slow… i guess i just have to compromise with that :)

I don’t think so. I just don’t like pop up ads. If you don’t like them, turn off Javascript in your browser, and all the sites you are surfing will be ad-free but of course, this is not recommended by me…

    @ conancat
Yes, they do provide me with some little income and this is why they are still shown in my blog. Advertlets uses flash as well but maybe Nuffnang really needs to improve the loading time of their ad (I mean shorten them) :-)

    Hi Wayne,

Actually our ads don’t load slow, they’re just designed to load only after the rest of your blog content has loaded so it does not hold up your blog from loading.

(Refer to the announcement we made on 9th July 2007).
    http://nuffnang.com.my/blog/?p=91

That’s why I’m rather surprised when you say that our ad slows down your blog… it used to before we rebuilt our ad syndication system before 9th July 2007, but now everything loads quickly.

Also, some of our ads are rich media ads, like the Cornetto ads you might see around where the user may no only just click on the ad but can also play an in-built game, interactiing with the ad. So these ads typically take a little longer to load up especially when we want to give priority to the blog’s content in terms of loading sequence.

Either ways, thank you very much for your kind words of encouragement and also for pointing out our cons. We’re forever on the road to improve.

    Thanks.

    -Timothy Tiah of Nuffnang

Regarding the loading time, initially, Nuffnang took up most of the time loading and caused the rest of the page to lag. After many complains, they let the page load first before Nuffnang advert. Yes, they load very slowly…I don’t know why. Maybe they are using Malaysian hoster? They are still looking into it.

I am not a fan of Timothy, to be frank. Just that I happen to know him personally. I still don’t earn that much because I don’t get a lot of CPM ads, maybe advertisers don’t like my controversial writings(?) LOL :D

    @ Timothy Tiah
Hi there, didn’t expect your arrival.

I think something is wrong with my broadband or firewall connection then. My page hanged at where Nuffnang panel is the day before I typed this. That is why I am writing this. After that day, everything seems to be fine.

It is a good solution but by the time the ads appear, visitors might had scrolled down or move to another page because some blogs have lots of scripts.

The best will be giving the panels priority to load and they load themselves fast. :-)

    @ Clare
 Timothy is just right above you. It’s just that his comment is awaiting moderation.

As a publisher, we always want third party scripts added to load faster and faster but it’s all up to them. The last thing we want is that they see our comments as whinings which I don’t think Timothy will do this…

I like your writings in some way. If your writing style can attract visitors, I don’t get it if advertisers shy away. Maybe wait till I have enough funds for my advertising needs, I will not forget about you.

Just give it some time and try to build up a larger visitor base, like making me visit your blog (although I visit it everyday :-) )…

I’m planning to give Nuffnang and Advertlets a try but it seems that both networks will only appeal to blogs and sites with very low traffic. This is because these blogs and sites can’t get into the large foreign networks which require huge traffics and high alexa ranking. We know that Alexa ranking is biased towards webmaster-targeted sites and most of the low-traffic sites are mostly about lifestyle or just personal ramblings.

Another point to note is that, any sites with huge traffics have users mostly outside of Malaysia compared to small blogs. This makes both networks to be less profitable for popular sites like liewcf.com but we all know traffics = money. So, unless both networks started counting users outside of Malaysia and Singapore, they won’t be attractive to popular sites. Beside, I’ve also heard many complaining about the lack of ads…

    Just my 2 cents.

Good point but the relationship between the platforms and publishers like us is mutual.

We will need to give support. As far as I know, Nuffnang is starting to have ads from US and Canada which are quite a good improvement. Advertlets and Nuffnang still have many room to grow.

If there is a lot of publishers, not just Malaysia and Singapore bloggers using Nuffnang and Advertlets, I am sure the advertisers will be impressed by the network that both these platforms cover.

For the ads, I can agree that there is a lack of it but as I said, the coverage of a advertising company needs to huge. They need our support and we need them as well but as always, it’s not the “human-relation” that matters when there is money involved.
