Make Competitors Suggest Your Keywords
Hi, it’s Wayne Liew again.
You face the problem of starting in affiliate marketing, site flipping or creating your own products because you fail to find a good set of keywords to target in the search engines.
Now, you will have no more excuses. Keyword research can now be easily dealt with the keyword research and suggestion method that I am going to show you.
How about making existing strongholds tell you what are the good keywords to target?
To make sure that you are really serious about learning this tip, I put a little barrier here. All you need to do is to click the READ MORE link. Trust me, you will benefit from this.
Keyword Research Step 1: Main Keyword
Think of a main keyword that is relevant to your niche. Start with something big, even if it is already saturated with 1 billion competition. Just give me one keyword.
For this case study, I am going to use "weight loss", which is so saturated that everyone is asking you to leave the niche. Is that so? Let’s look.
Too hard for you? It should be because it is impossible for an "SEO Expert" like me as well. Don’t target it and don’t target any one of the long tail format of the keyword "weight loss" (shown below) because the competition is stiff.
Keyword Research Step 2: Seek Competitors Help
In the first image, I have shown that you need to copy the URLs that appear under a major keyword.
Now, fire up Google AdWords Keyword Tool.
You need to paste the URLs that you have copied earlier into the box shown from the image below.
Yes, you need to go through the fuss one by one but my experience tells me that after pasting in three URLs, I should be getting enough keywords to target.
Keyword Research Step 3: Appreciate My Trick
Google will show you a large list of keywords that you have never thought of before.
For my "weight loss" case study, Google showed up the following set of keywords, which I then choose "vegetarian weight loss" because it is receiving a huge amount of traffic.
Now, run the SEO Book Keyword Research Tool. Type in "vegetarian weight loss". What you can see are some long tail keywords for it that have really low competition. TARGET THESE!
Amazingly, "vegetarian weight loss" only has competition of around 341,000. Viola! A golden keyword that can be easily optimized! By the way, anything below the 1 million mark is achievable for me. It all depends on your SEO and link building abilities.
Why Does This Work?
Using this keyword suggest method, Google actually tells you what they think an authority site is targeting. However, authority sites might be optimized for a highly searched keyword with high competition only (for example, weight loss), not keywords like "vegetarian weight loss".
Keywords like "vegetarian weight loss" might not get as much searches as the primary keyword "weight loss". However, it is much easier for you to climb up the rankings. Trust me, if you get a number 1 position for vegetarian weight loss, you will get at least 100 uniques a day from the search term.
Find a few more of such keywords and you will be getting 500 unique visits a day very soon.
Your Opinion on Keyword Research
What methods of keyword research that you use? Does the above method add something or two to your knowledge database?
Tell me what are your opinions and your difficulties faced in keyword research. Do not think too much when it comes to keyword research. I would rather focus on link building and SEO more because I believe any keyword is scalable.

I’ve got no more to say. I never thought of copying the URLs into Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Brilliant!
….wait, actually I do
. Just remembered a simple tip. If at some point you really have no idea of what niche you’re gonna in, try Google Trends or Yahoo Buzz.
Hi Louis,
Yahoo Buzz and Google Trends are good if you want to make a quick buck. I find following them really tiring though…
Wayne, from the weight loss example above. How can you tell the competition for it is around 341,000? I didn’t find the number for the competition on SEObook’s tool nor Google adword keywords tool’s. All I saw was just a bar.
Click on the number that shows you how many daily search on Google and you will be brought to the search results where you will see the amount of competition.
Wow, I will surely try this method.
I’m planning on building several small sites in the future; this helped a lot.
Hi Lucas,
Glad that the above tips help. Come back for more or subscribe to the future contents of this blog.
[...] Stuck with keyword research? Why not let your competitors do the hard work? [...]
I might try this on one of my Squidoo lenses.
Google AdWords Keyword Tool has always been my choice for keyword suggestion, since they ‘own’ the SE, so it’s better for us to seek a little help from uncle G
This is actually great advice.
It’s not completely reliable though as although there are just 350k results returned for vegetarian weight loss, the sites there may have a large number of backlinks and be up to scratch with seo tactics.
There may be less competition, but will there be no strong competition? That is the real necessity.
John
You are a genius wayne:)
