I think many new bloggers have the mindset that to earn from online advertisements is to have clicks on those advertisements. I am telling you one secret, which is a common thing known by many experienced bloggers out there. You can earn money from online advertisements, even without visitor’s clicks, with CPM (cost per thousand impressions) ads.

For example, let us take a look at the snapshot below which is my earnings from Advertlets. OK, it is not a lot but they are still money right? At least I can get what I want to teach straight to the point.

Can you see the day which I had put in a red box? On that day, as you can see, don’t have any clicks from my readers but I still earned MYR0.687. Why? Among all the 337 impressions, there are CPM ads among them and with that, I earned a bit every time these ads loads on my site.

Now, you look at the day right above the red box, you can see clicks for that day but under the CPC column, I am not earning because my visitors clicked on a CPM ads, which clicks will not be counted.

The higher of the number of visitors you have in a day, you will get a higher number of impressions and your earnings from CPM ads will of course grow in line with it!

Advertising platforms offering CPM ads after the jump, just for my readers!
Now you know that this is another easy way to earn some pennies, you must be thinking of what advertising platforms have this kind of ads. I can tell you most of the advertising platforms I used are offering CPM ads. They are:

(For Adbrite, I am using an affiliate link to get commission for what you earn, you won’t get lesser just because you are sharing with me, I will just get an extra or half of what you are earning, got money earn together ma.. )

These platforms may offer CPM in different ways, for example, paying you CPM earnings based on previous weeks’ impression numbers. For your knowledge, Nuffnang is the one doing this. When your blog got chosen by an advertiser, you will get paid based on the visitor numbers the week before the campaign starts.

Why advertisers use CPM method?
You must be wondering why advertisers just want people to see their ads rather than clicking into their site.

Well, I guess the reason I like this. If you are a food outlet, you already gain exposure with people looking at the ads, there’s no need to visit my site. Moreover, there’s not much a food outlet site can offer other than you visiting the shop itself to try the food out.

Is my explanation understandable? Is this an easier way to earn money? If you have any questions or opinions, just ask by contacting me or commenting here. I will reply you in the comments’ section or send an e-mail to you.

Erm, if it is big enough, I will of course tell but it is an embarrassing figure! :-(

Google Adsense offers CPM ads as well but since they banned me, give no face to them!

Be serious, if you see a banner appearing on your Adsense ads, mostly it is a CPM ads, no people will pay for CPM by just displaying text… :-)

Don’t know this is the how many time I heard this kind of stuff from you..
    Dahlah in class tell me..
Visit your blog also get a piece of it somemore..
I don’t think it’s just as simple as the impression…

Impression from a website might earn them a better income and an anonymous website will earn them a little.. * As in per impression*

Before I start replying, you can see how lucky you are if I am one of your classmates, I share everything I know on blogging! (Got whack by someone beside me… )

    @ Broken
I tell you everything because you are my friend, and I think my readers need this as well because I see them as friends! I love my readers!

It is indeed as simple as that. The CPM is set by the advertiser, they might have the option of choosing which site to have their ads published on and this is where the different rates come in.

If I am an advertiser, I will only choose based on blog traffic demographics and niche/category because I will get coverage by just letting people see my ads.

I won’t look at the traffic or page rank, because the it’s already counted in per thousand impression basis. Someone sees it, you get money, no one visits you, no money.

    Let say..If I put..more than one..advertlets ads inside every entry…
    Will it increases the CPM??
Means that, once my page is loaded…and 3 of ads from advertlets…Is count as Per Impression as well? or count as 3?

Very nice article. Probably that’s also the reason why I’m still earning from google ads even though very few clicks on them..i currently earned $11 from 3 of my blogs I opened a month ago :)

Not bad..well still hoping for a John Chow/Darren Rose earning …

    @ Kenneth
Good question. The cost per 1000 impression will be the same but when you have many ad panels, your impressions will increase and automatically your earnings will go up!

Take my home page for example, you see two Advertlets ad panels right? When someone loads it, I will get two impressions. I hope you understand what I am trying to tell you here.

    @ Sam
Thanks for visiting my site. Yes, I would like to but I am banned from Adsense. :-( I have the same hope as well but it’s still a long long way. Nevermind, I am just 17! OK, I am starting to boast again…

i think before getting into CPM, the blogger need to have a good base of visitors to starting CPM. So for really n00bies, the first step is publicity and with that only comes into CPM.

And extra comments on Nuffnang and Advertlets, they only count CPM for visitors from selected countries. If the blogger has a bigger base from Msia then it’s good, else the CPM is just useless.

    @ JiNG
Thanks for visiting. Nuffnang uses the same way as well but one little different thing about them is like when an advertiser chose your blog to advertise this week, you will be paid based on the traffic (in uniques) you get last week.

I am putting Nuffnang as well because I am earning from them. This doesn’t mean that you can click on your own ads, Advertlets and Nuffnang have their own system to detect such excessive page loads. Thanks for visiting my blog.

    @ pikey
Yes, but for sites with low traffic, they rarely get clicks on ads as well. They will earn a very very low amount but even MYR0.001 is money right?

    @ jayhan
Hope you can start earning then. Visitors will not find it irritating if your ad placement is good. This give a way for them to motivate you because of good contents you wrote as well. :-)

Just ask me anything on this and I’ll try my best to answer.

    @ qing87 and LeeChien
You’re welcome. Just visit back to check out for more!

    @ Monkey Wong
Yes, they are not paying you on CPC, they pay based on CPM.

Haven’t started running any ads in my blog. Think will start one soon…

I agree on your point on the exposure without clicking on the ads. Just like the Manhattan Fish Market ads which I could see from over 70% of ads by nuffnang(?) last time.

Your blog content is great and it will sure help you to bring in money if you monetise it.

P/S: The Fish Market ads is served by Advertlets and it’s still there. Do you went to eat it after you saw the ads?

how do I request for cpm or cpc ads? Can I change it or it depends on advertizer?

Some advertising network only publishes CPM ads and some only publishes CPC ads but most companies now have both in their inventories. In most cases, if an advertising company offers banner ads, it is likely that CPM is one of the earning methods offered to publishers. You can always change it as well if both options are offered.

However, CPM-based advertising companies only accepts sites or blogs with a high amount of traffic.
