In some niches, for example blogs about celebrities, the blogger doesn't really need to comment because those sorts of blogs are just dishing out gossip, pictures etc. It's very different with more personal blogs or educational / informative blogs. In these types of blogs I think it's just plain rude to ignore your readers, without them you are nothing. I think the niche can play a part too.
