Last year, I met Desmond Ong through one of his comments on The University Kid. When I first visited his blog, I shrugged him off, thinking that he is just another nobody giving a random shot for success by blogging about how to make money online.
When he contacted me via email, saying that he is a fellow Malaysian, everything changed. I went back to his blog and started browsing through the content despite the cheesy theme used back then
.
The ins and outs of site flipping are being ripped into pieces, day by day, by this 18-year-old. Case studies and interviews that are featured on his blog, Desmond Blog, clearly demonstrate that he is undoubtedly a young site flipping expert.
Interview with Desmond Ong
Desmond was kind enough to take out some of his time to do this interview with me. In this young entrepreneur interview, he shared with me some of his entrepreneurial insights and how young aspiring entrepreneurs can become successful. With that, I hope you will enjoy the interview below.

Wayne: Hi Desmond! First of all, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview you. I really think that my blog readers can benefit from your experience and expertise.
Desmond: Thanks for the opportunity Wayne.
Wayne: Me, of course, have been interacting with you for quite some time but there might be some others that don’t know about you yet. Do you mind taking a minute to introduce yourself and basically talk about what you do online?
Desmond: My name is Desmond Ong and what I do online is basically the simple business theory – buy something cheap and sell it at a higher price. Of course instead of dealing with tangible products or products that will cost me a bundle, I sell websites online. I am better known as a site flipper – someone who buys cheap sites and resells at higher prices.
Wayne: Cool! From what I understand, you make thousands from website flipping every month. Most 18 years old like you often spend most of their time playing computer games and chill out every night. How did you come up with the idea of running your own business and make money online?
Desmond: Well, I started making money online when I was fifteen, when I know that people like Warren Buffett and Michael Dell started out in early ages. For me, I have limited resources and the only thing I can do was to sell stuffs online. My first venture online was really selling customized stuff on eBay. Of course, back then I was making less than $50/month!
Wayne: $50/month is actually quite substantial in the eyes of some college students. Are your parents supportive of what you are doing? Do they understand what website flipping is?
Desmond: $50/month is pretty good for some pocket money when I was still a high school kid. My parents are actually more prone towards education over my achievements online. They are supportive as they’re the one that paid for my "online investments" like domain names and web hosting before I can pay them all by myself! Yes, they do understand what website flipping is.
Wayne: Great to hear about that because most Asian parents are pretty conservative in the sense that they want their children to get a 9-5 job.
Desmond: That’s very true.
Wayne: How about your friends? Have you ever tried to influence them to start making money online, sort of spreading the virus of entrepreneurship around?
Desmond: I have weird friends. They usually see me as someone who makes money online and that’s it. After all, not much people respect what I did and none of them really know what I’m doing after all. They have dreams to work in a 9-5 environment, and who am I to stop them from achieving their "dreams"?
Wayne: Can’t deny about that. Most of my friends actually prefer a 9-5 as well. So Desmond, as a young entrepreneur and a college entrepreneur, what are your thoughts about college education? Does it help a lot in terms of knowledge to grow your business or to run your business better?
Desmond: I think college education is actually just another moment of experiences that you have to go through. It’s a good thing though because you make friends, socialize with people from different environments and different life goals. After all, I don’t want to mix around with internet marketers all the time! College education does not actually help me in my business. Not only it burdens me, I actually hate it too. But after all, college is something that everyone has to go through — so, why not me?
Wayne: You actually provided a good perspective on how young entrepreneurs should look at their college education instead of ever wanting to become a college dropout. This question might be a little personal but I’ll ask it anyway. How’s a day of a site flipper like? Do you sit in front of your computer whole day long?
Desmond: Not really. It depends on how much you want to make a day though. We usually scout a site, buy it and get it transferred. Then we spend an hour "renovating" the site and then resell it. While it was listed, I would probably play some soccer, socialize with friends and play video games. Personally, I think site flipping is the only internet business that doesn’t require you to sit in front of the computer for more than 3 hours a day.
Wayne: That is very interesting but unfortunately, not many people know the proper steps to successfully flip a site and make a handsome profit, which is one of the main reasons I bring you on today. Desmond, you are running a business at such a young age. Have you encountered any troubles and difficulties due to your age?
Desmond: Before I was 18, I couldn’t get a credit card and there are tons of restrictions for people below 18. But site flipping eliminates all that. Even my 15 year-old student is making big bucks every month now through site flipping. As long as you are honest, polite and determined, site flipping will be the best online business that will not restrict you entirely.
Wayne: Wow, 15 years old?! You are training a bunch of site flipping protégés already?
Desmond: Yes I do Wayne.
Wayne: I think we passed the mark for this interview but before I round this interview up, can you reveal to the readers of Wayne Liew Dot Com about some of the projects that you are currently working on? Perhaps some sneak peek of underground projects that you have never revealed to others before?
Desmond: Well, I am actually working on a site that guides people on how to flip sites through various ways and of course I will introduce a couple of new types of flips that no other site flippers are truly aware of. The site shall be live next week. Wait Up!
Wayne: Can’t wait to check that site out. Do you mind sharing what are some of the books or blogs that you really like and read all the time?
Desmond: CDFNetworks, UberAffiliate.com and CashTactics.net. I don’t really read books except Rich Dad Poor Dad and some fiction novels.
Wayne: AffBoom.com? I am actually having trouble to allocate time for that blog.
Where do you see yourself and your business 5 years from now? Will you be sticking with site flipping and Internet marketing? Or we can expect to see you jumping on other ventures as well?
Desmond: I am hoping to form a side business company myself that specializes in online ventures. I am currently working on larger flips as well as learning some strategies in affiliate marketing.
Wayne: Definitely look forward to that. For teenagers that are looking to become the next Desmond or the next maven in site flipping, what will be your number 1 advice to them?
Desmond: Determination. You have to have determination to succeed online. Don’t let failures blind you away from your route to success.
Wayne: Yup, and be sure to ignore those critics by naysayers as well. Desmond, you have provided us with a lot of insights here. Where can people learn more about you?
Desmond: Of course over at my blog at DesmondBlog.com. I hang out there everyday more than in my local coffee shop.
Wayne: Great, on that note, I would like to wrap this interview up. Thank you, Desmond for spending your precious time with us today. Look forward to have you again.
Desmond: Thanks Wayne.
Entrepreneurs Interview Afterthoughts
Desmond is a person that cares about his community and people who wants to learn more about site flipping, which I think is the most important thing when you run a business. You need to focus on the relationship with your prospects and always make yourself available.
Unlike an ever-hustling entrepreneur like me, Desmond lives a well-balanced life
. He plays soccer and video games during his past times. This clearly shows that running your own business is not as hard as it seems. Like what Desmond mentioned, determination is crucial to bring you success in the future.
