Ongoing Blogging Experiment: Operation Entrecard

by Wayne Liew on January 29, 2008

If you scroll down a bit after the fold of Wayne Liew Dot Com, you should see a small Entrecard widget which I have made available due to some motivation I get from Victor of The Neotrepreneur and Deimos of AhKong.net.

Wayne Liew Dot Com Entrecard

I am still a bit skeptic about this banner exchange traffic generation widget but I thought I would give it a try since the whole blogosphere is hot about it.

Entrecard Testimonials By Other Bloggers

The following few will be a few quotes that I have collected previously from a few blogs on their thought about this traffic generating and money making tool.

First up, the quote by David Peralty of eXtra For Every Publisher on Why I Won’t Be Using EntreCard is what makes me doubtful on whether to sign up to Entrecard before this.

EntreCard is kinda dumb, and people that are using it, are just increasing the money that flows into the pockets of the guy that created it.

Once the buzz wears out, he will sell the site, pocket a decent deal of money, and leave most people with another useless widget on their blogs.

John Cow Quit Entrecard

Apart from this, John Cow’s decision to quit from Entrecard added a nail to Entrecard’s publicity as I quoted the following from him:

The EC power users are so keen on getting becoming popular within the ranks of the community, that they are working hard in chain dropping their cards on all EC blogs each day, just to accumulate more credits and inflating their own advertising prices. Emails keep getting send around, asking for drops, recommendations and whatever else it is that will get you popular on the categories pages. Its really not doing any good for anyone.

Entrecard lovers, you should read Entrecard Another Loser by Vic.

I would say, as other services in the past, the fad for the Entrecard should be gone in six months or less and we will start seeing the widget disappear from the side bars just like the BlogRush and the Agloco ads.

Nevertheless, Entrecard do have some good reviews and this quote is by Abdylas on his article, EntreCard performance after 12 days.

In summary, Entrecard is doing quite good. I would say it’s a must tool for new blogs. Because unlike other services (like BlogRush) it does work, and it does bring traffic every day. Even if it is not much, but there is a constant traffic flow to your blog from Entrecard.

I will still be using it for the next few weeks and then decide if I want to continue.

What will your say on Entrecard?

My One Day Experience With Entrecard

Entrecard

After one full day of using them, I can have a hypothesis set up: This thing is crazy enough to make me procrastinate. The experience with Entrecard is crazy on my first day with it. I see cards in my inbox, over 10 of ad requests in one day (maybe my rate is cheap) and me myself went card dropping as well!

Whether it can get me traffic or not, it will be told next month where I will be showing the traffic that Entrecard had brought me. For Entrecard users who are still using it and wanted to make it a great traffic source for your blog, be sure to read 10 Entrecard Traffic Tips for Success.

Credits For Entrecard Experiment

There is one person that I would like to thank particularly as he contributed the most vital part for me to register for Entrecard. To participate in Entrecard, a 125×125 banner is proved vital unless you want to use the ugly pre-made banners.

Jason from ‘Dat’ Money helped me to design my 125×125 banner for my Entrecard use for only $1! If you are thinking of getting a better banner for your Entrecard for your campaign, I would suggest that you seek for Jason’s help on 125×125 banners as well.

I’ve had success with Entrecard, and I hope you do too. Some of the traffic comes from people only coming to drop their card, but Entrecard has also allowed me to get a lot of exposure and put my site in front of a new audience.

You can read my post about it here:

After BlogRush and its predecessors, I made the decision not to run any of this type of widget on the majority of my sites. They take up space and if they are not a serious distraction for your readers then they’re not working, if they are a serious distraction then that’s equally a problem

I just got one thing to say: Entrecard almost doubled my traffic and RSS count . You just gotta bait the leeching card droppers with good Entrecard related posts.

Nope, I have not installed it. I would only consider installing it if it works for you – since I trust you as my blogging friend more than what others might say about it.

I have mixed emotions about Entrecard. The bounce rate is incredibly high and the visitors aren’t coming in the leaps and bounds that others have mentioned for their site. Actually, I receive about 10 unique visitors from Entrecard per day and because they’re dropping and running, it creates no value for me.

Slowly I’m starting to conclude that my time is better spent networking within other social media sites. Additionally, spending more time commenting is always good as well.

I’ve written a few analysis articles on it.

The main problem is the high bounce rate (avg 90% with about 45 seconds on site) caused by serial card droppers. This is a bad mix with Adsense and will tend to get your account Smart Priced (ie you make 1/10 of what you were earning).

The good part of it is that you’ll get a little extra exposure and, even if 90% bounce away quickly, you will get about a 10% boost in regular readers. If you’re depending on a lot of referral traffic rather than organic search engine traffic for your blog this helps.

@ Tay
A week passed and I have yet to see any good of it… :???:

@ David
That is a good point. However, after I moved my widgets on the sidebar around, I find myself a nice place for a widget like these so I guess it would be nice to have an ongoing experiment.

Let’s just see what Entrecard can do.

@ Neotrepreneur
I have seen many hard core EC users did that and the whole eventually became filled with such posts, which I don’t think is feasible as they are still a new service.

@ pablopabla
I am grateful to hear this. Anyway, results will be out soon but of course, it might differs from those hard core users.

@ Katy
You will have all kinds of marketing ways to heap the growth of your blog. If the results and all the tracking shows you that a method is working, eliminate other methods and focus on just that one working method.

@ Frank C
Bounce rate is something very common for referral traffic, unless it is from a blog within the same niche. Social medias and EC are already known with their high bounce rate.

@ Sean
Glad that your site is performing well with EC.

i was experimenting with entrecard too, but i found it useless too imo, maybe because I am not putting enough effort to work with it. I know some find it very effective, but for me, it does not really works.

But i will it there in my blog for several more weeks.

You will need to write some EC optimizing blog posts which I find very irritating. Also, you will need to drop cards every time you come across a blog with a widget.

Anyway, I don’t find it very useful until now…

It helped tremendously and it is still helping now.
Personally, I feel that it is a great tool for those who know how to use it.

For those who haven’t get their hands on Entrecard, will you give it a try soon?
My point of view? It is their own loss should they choose not to use it.

@jayhan:
You are not using EntreCard correctly. -_-

@Wayne Liew:
The same goes for you as well. -_-

Well, maybe Entrecard suits different bloggers. For me, surfing around and dropping cards is a side activity that I will only be doing if I have extra time to do so.

Anyway, I do admit the fact that I did not do much research on Entrecard might have caused the slack results I get from Entrecard.

@Wayne:
If you have the extra time to invest on EntreCard, done correctly, the result is worth the time spent.

Anyway, just a simple but very useful tip:

If someone dropped their EntreCard into your EntreCard Inbox, take some to visit their site to drop your EntreCard into their EntreCard Inbox.

EntreCarders call this “Reciprocating” or “You Drop I Follow”.

The thing with EntreCard is that it has a special kind of a “You help me, I help you” system, or “You visit my site, I visit your site” thingie.

The ability to generate traffic is there, it is up to oneself to snare the visitors from reading one’s content by coming up with contents which would catches the visitors’ interest.

Oh by the way, the Cow is an idiot.
