My Definition of Entrepreneurship, What’s Yours?

by Wayne Liew on March 16, 2009

I love entrepreneurship. I love monitoring activities in the entrepreneurship world and helping small business owners. I also love interacting with fellow entrepreneurs and this is why I introduced Entrepreneur Interviews. Most importantly, I love how entrepreneurs turn their wildest dreams into reality.

Entrepreneurship

But wait! How about the money and profits?

Money and Profits in Entrepreneurship

As an accounting student, it is hard for me to ignore the importance of profits and cash flow. They measure the performance of a business and if they are not showing positive signs, your venture will not last although it may be based on the best idea ever.

Investors buy ideas but at the end of the day, they want to see results. Entrepreneurs should keep a close eye on their profits and cash flow but both of them shouldn’t be the boundaries that restrict ideas.

Running a business is about making the money and showing the profits but entrepreneurship is more than that. Entrepreneurship is about implementing an idea successfully, be it a startup, a project given by your boss or non-profit movements.

From Profits to Changing the World

To be honest, I started my online marketing ventures with the aim of trying to make more money online and to make my life as a student better. Soon after that, when I started reading books written by successful entrepreneurs and articles about entrepreneurship, my mindset started to change.

As an entrepreneur, success isn’t just about running a profitable business. The excitement comes when you are able to add value to people’s life and ultimately, making the world a better place. Everyday I wake up, I think to myself, how can I add value to someone’s life today? How can I make the world a better place?

Every week, I try to put out content on this blog that I think, will be able to help another entrepreneur or small business owner out there. I try to provide personalized directions through my consultation. I am always trying to help by providing answers on various social media platforms and forums.

All these will not happen if I am just focusing on the profits and the money I can make solely from online marketing.

My Definition of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is the mindset of wanting to turn ideas that add value, into reality.

Compared to traditional definitions, it is more than starting or running a company, it is more than innovation, it is more than being gutsy and it is more than moving forward relentlessly to achieve what we want to achieve.

What is Your Definition of Entrepreneurship?

Some people out there may have a fixed definition for entrepreneurship while some may have vague meanings for it. The above will be my take on the definition of entrepreneurship.

Don’t worry. I will not blast you if you beg to differ because I define entrepreneurship that way so that I know which path to take when faced with options while running my business and ventures.

  • Many people tend to believe that you can learn to become an entreprenuer but I blieve it is a natural ability to born to be one. It takes passion and commitment. Not many people have what it takes to become an entreprenuer no matter how talented they are.
  • I think entrepreneurship is all about the mindset and because mindset itself is a word with vague meanings, people have different definitions for entrepreneurship.

Passion is definitely a must have in entrepreneurship and I think it is a must for a lot of things as well if we want to become successful at doing those things.

Glad to hear that your blog is doing well. Keep it up! ;)

When i was in university I had a simple view of entrepreneurship as someone taking a big risk and trying to make it big.

With a few years my view became simpler, and i viewed it as an essential part to getting ahead and its easy to make it big. Ya that was the hype of these business books I believed.

I also viewed entrepreneurship for the money part not the actual making a difference, doing it with a passion.

Now I view still view it as essential part to getting ahead and making something of your life, of course I don't think its for everyone.

I think the passion has to be in there before anything else, next comes probably management skills to be able to run the operation and people.

So far with my blog, I am enjoying the ride.
  • My definition of entrepreneurship is very similar to yours except I also agree with the traditional definition that it involves taking risks and making decisions on the move. Great blog, as always.
  • Thanks. Wikipedia defines entrepreneur as a person who owns a business which I think is not true. It kinda prompts me to write this ranting blog post.
