Yesterday, I wrote a few blogging tips on how a blog can have both search engine optimization (SEO) elements and good readability within a blog post or a blog as a whole. The responses I received from my readers are basically on the need of search engine traffic.

A search engine is a large index which will present their users with a list of relevant sites and pages based on the users’ searches. Bloggers with the aim of presenting blog post with high quality contents and readability tends to ignore search engine optimization. However, blog traffic source polls still show that on majority, blogs are dependent on search engine traffic.

Why? Is it because their blog is hopeless in producing great and compelling contents?

Easy free source of traffic

Search engine traffic is free of charge, which is good, unless you plan to outsource the optimization to some companies that will charge you an expensive price. Search engine optimization needed to get those traffic is easy to learn as well.

Wind Mill Power Station

One way to get a high index position easily with simple SEO techniques is to keep the following in mind:

Relevance of Propaganda to Blogging

Propaganda, as I mentioned earlier can bring a lot of benefits to your blog. When we plan to launch a propaganda exercise, we tend to leave deep marks in the subconscious mind of our readers which will lead them back to our blogs, opt-in for newsletters and purchase a product based on our recommendations.

Propaganda can be seen as a blogging style, which combined persuasion and interaction with the aim to influence. Seems like it is a difficult term for you? If you have a "Yes" answer to all the following questions, it is highly possible that you have a propaganda plan in mind.

  • Knowing where to optimize for better results
  • Keep existing readers
  • Acquire new readers
  • Build up authority and credibility with personal style

Baited

On some blogs like pelf-ism is contagious, whenever you leave a comment, the headline of your most recent post will be published along with your comments. This is done via the Commentluv plugin.

Catchy title is one way of baiting traffic. Some people can be so good in writing catchy titles so that they can get the attention of others with just the title. However, one should be careful that catchy titles must match the contents because when it does not, the visitors that were baited will only become passing traffic.

20 Ways to Get Constant Post Level Links [Part 1] got quite a good response and with this post, I hope most of my blogging readers out there can utilize these methods to build more incoming links via post level links.

As I have mentioned in the previous part,

Bloggers don’t simply link to other blogs since linking out sends readers away and not only that, bloggers will suffer a hit to their reputation in the niche with a bad recommendation.

Post level links are easier to sought for compared to blogroll links on the sidebars since in every new post on a blog, 2-4 or even near to 10 links for link posts can be included in a blog post.

Links come with traffic but links also bring traffic and this is why you should continue reading on the other 10 tips on how to get constant post level links.

For bloggers who are lost on why post level links in blogs are so important, I will list out the few reasons that will prompt you to read on.

  • Targeted traffic
  • Technorati rankings
  • Relevance of links
  • Increase Google Page Rank and search engine keywords ranking
  • Coverage for blog and brand

10 Ways on Getting Constant Post Level Links from Blogs

Definition articles

Definition articles are articles that list out all the meanings of technical jargons in your niche and will be linked to whenever such terms are being used in your posts so that you will not need to explain it in each and every one of your posts.

Not every blog has its own definition post. If your blog has one and it is known among the bloggers in your niche, the post will be linked over and over again by them whenever they include words they find it hard to squeeze in the explanation within their posts.

Great blog design

You might not be having great contents but you can have a blog design that is really standing out to deserve the mention. Blog designs can stand out in many ways, this includes unique usability such as scrolling sideways instead of vertically and bombastic graphical elements.

Bottle Unique Blog Design

I am sure many of you have seen bloggers compiling great web designs from time to time such as 60 Elegant and Visually Appealing Designs by Smashing Magazine and 20 Websites With Unique Layouts by Steven Snell which gives out link credits to these blogs. You will only need to make sure that your blog screenshot and the design will make visitors go WOW on first impression.

Get your blog or articles featured on big blogs, FREQUENTLY

Pitching top bloggers in your niche is always an interesting and rewarding effort. Once one of your articles gets featured, the chances of it getting mentioned in many other blogs and getting onto a social media site are high.

Posts such as Ending Do-Follow for Google and Malaysians’ PayPal Dream Comes True has been featured by some top blogs and viral effect is surely something you will want to see daily happening to your blog. If you think you have produced something that you think is of quality, always try e-mailing big bloggers about it. It might be a selfless act but a great content is to be shown, not to be kept unknown.

Give out links

Karma always happens in blogging. One way to get people to know about the existence of your blog is by pinging them via a link to their articles. They will hop over, take a look at your blog and a link from them is possible if your posts are interesting to them.

Be a stingy link giver and others will be stingy towards you as well. Apart from linking to top bloggers, one should place effort on finding small blogs with equal or greater contents to be linked as these bloggers will pay more attention to you.

Thank the linkers

When a link is pointed to your articles, a trackback will appear in your blog comment section. A new link pointing to your blog will also be featured in the information page of your blog on Technorati.

Boy Shaking Hands

Take a few minutes of your time to hop over and appreciate those who linked you. Also, other than posting a simple "Thank You" message in their link giveaway posts, you can actually comment on the articles recommended by the posts as well.

Ongoing linking contest

A popular way to get links is to hold a linking contest on your blog. No matter the prize is a link being featured on your PR4 homepage or a cash prize of $500, there will be some who are willing to participate.

Win the Cash Prize Money

However, to get links all year round with this method will consume a lot of resources if the prize if something material to you. Thus, this is not a recommended way to get links for new blogs. Also, such a method will only bring in non-targeted traffic, meaning they link you not because of your contents, it is because of the prize.

Participation in blogs giving out links

It is easy to identify such blogs. Constant link giving blogs often have a link giveaway post during the weekends. A check on their Archives will reveal this. Commenting on such blogs will get the bloggers’ attention and if they are interested in your articles, a link might be given to you.

Networking with link givers

Make friends with link givers, interact with them. Of course, this might seems to be cunning but when you actually interact with the right way without just pushing for a link to your blog, you will get links constantly for your blog.

Remember, don’t go to the extreme on demanding for a link. The blogger might be put off by you and leave you no chance of getting near the blogger ever because of the bad impression you have set for yourself.

Make yourself an icon within your niche

Being an icon can be easy for some but difficult in a saturated niche. However, once you are a well-known icon in your niche, when people wanted to write on something within the niche, they will seek relevant information from your blog as reference because of your known expertise and authority to produce a quality post.

When they use your articles as reference, a link is often given from the articles that they have produced. I am always impressed by authority bloggers because of their ability to influence so many bloggers with one post and will have at least one link to their posts that they have written.

Theme database

Site creation, especially blog launches is booming today. Many searches are done on search engines today to dig out a proper theme for their blogs and sites. Posts like 100 Excellent Free WordPress Themes is very successful even though it does not offer self-made themes.

You need not to be a theme designer to build up a theme database. You can collect "free to distribute themes" out there, make them downloadable on your site, write up a compilation post of themes or sponsor a theme which allows you to have a link somewhere in the theme pointing to your blog. A link will be referred when the database is being recommended by others.

Holiday traffic

December was a month where people celebrate holidays all around the world. We have Christmas and New Year coming up. Students are having school holidays and everyone is in a relaxed mood to welcome the coming new year.

Holidays are always the worst performing days for this blogging tips blog and with a few blogging holidays that I took myself, the traffic went even lower.

What will be the causes of low December traffic (holiday traffic)? Does it have anything to do with you or it is just the behavior of your readers?

Factors that Influence December (Holiday) Traffic

Blog Niche

Shopping sites will see a huge increase of traffic. If you are having a shopping guide blog, you are likely to see more readers, especially if your site ranked well for shopping-related keywords.

On the other hand, sites that promotes effort and productivity from readers such as blogging tips blogs, computer repairs blogs, business blogs and others will see a decrease in traffic because the readers will want to be "lazy" on such topics.

Holiday related contents

Changing your contents to suit the coming holiday such as relating it to Christmas, New Year or even relaxing stuffs will bring in traffic for you. Keeping your usual style will be good but a little tweak would make things better.

For example, if you have a food blog, you can start blogging about the recipe of the food that will be prepared for Christmas night.

A content which is related to the holiday season will take readers come back to your blog since it suited their offline relaxed lifestyle. The tension of productivity might not be there when you are blogging about something related to the holiday season.

Reader groups

What is the age group of your readers? Are they professionals or seniors at home? If your blog has teenagers as your readers, you are likely to receive more traffic because the school holidays will surely give them more time to get online.

On the flip side, you will see a slight fall in traffic if your blog is targeting professionals and seniors, you might be seeing a drop because a holiday means no work and extra leaning for them.

Holiday environment

Is your blog having a holiday environment? Effects such as snow falling down and also a Christmas theme will certainly bring in the warm effect of this holiday season.

Visitors will come back more because of it and sometimes new readers will stop by for some time. Visitors stay for a longer time as it is the psychology at work. They will like they are on a holiday and they are relaxing around your blog.

Your own effort

Are you having a holiday as well? If you work harder than usual during the holidays, putting in a huge amount of effort in seeking new readers, you shouldn’t see a drop.

Blogger like me is doomed to see a drop with a few blogging leaves and the slowing down of posting frequency. The lesson here is that if you work hard, you will get paid for it.

As I promised you all, especially personal bloggers, in Part 1 of 20 Tips For A Personal Blog Success and My Love Story With StumbleUpon, I will put up another 10 tips for personal bloggers to get more traffic, and hopefully some links to their blogs. Let us look at what are the 10 tips I am offering this time round.

Cut Down Unnecessary Widgets
One of the most frequent thing I see when I visit most of the personal blogs are widget like games, pets, Hug Me, chat box, time and so on. I know personal blogs for some are just a personal space and what widget that you would like to place on your blog is out of my control but I would be pleased if you will hear my explanation.

Widgets must be usable, such as a chat box for communicating with your readers, Twitter to tell your readers what are you doing or even a game (just one) to make your readers stay longer. Having a lot of widgets will slows down the site load speed which will irritate first time visitors, attentions of readers will be diverted from your main contents and your whole blog design will be spoiled with the clogged sidebars or footers.

Travel Frequently
If you have the chance to travel a lot, a personal blog is a must for you. When you travel a lot, you will not encounter a blogger’s block as you will have things to share such as photos of food and your destinations to share.

Travelling With Camera

When I say travel, it might not be restricted to other countries (of course this is the best), it can be a shopping mall near you, a mountain in your neighbourhood which you can enjoy a wonderful scenery or even a restaurant opposite your house. Get to new places frequently and you will have a reason for your readers to visit your blog.

Keep Up With Current Issues
Although you will be blogging about your own issues, blogging on some current issues once in a while will give something fresh to your readers. What kind of current issues? Well, it all depends on what kind of readers do you have. If they are mainly from a country, post some events about the countries that will catch their attention. If your blog is mainly visited by teenage girls, you can try posting news about a male celebrity which they like a lot!

Optimize Word Of Mouth Marketing

Man Talking To A Woman

Compared to a niche blog, personal blogs are easier to be marketed through word of mouth. You can make a new friend and at the point of knowing each other, tell the person about your blog and if possible, prompt him to give you his blog URL if he has one. Having your blogs known by your friends will help as well as a link on their blog might bring in some traffic for you.

Don’t Go Too Far With Thoughts
When I write about my thoughts, I won’t go on and on with it. When you think about a lot of things at once, don’t write all of them out. Put it in different posts and post it on a different time. Posting a post with too many issues in one shot will keep your visitors away from voicing themselves up because after reading your post, their heads might be spinning.

No Friends Birthday, Unless…

Chocolate Birthday Cake

It is nothing to do with you. They might be your best friends ever but I can tell you that this kind of posts will definitely give a punch on your blog. Other than your close friends that will read it, I guess no one will. I am not trying to make your friends leave you but unless they are famous offline or online, no “outsiders” will actually bother about it. You might want to do the “evaluation” yourself as I don’t want to be branded as a selfish blogging guider. :-P

Look Out for Breaking News
Breaking news will always be a hit. Walk around your neighbourhood or drive around in your car, you might be lucky if someone is attempting suicide or you caught an aircraft slammed into a building. You will get a spike in traffic if you market or spread out the news well. If you are lucky to get a Digg effect, I wish you luck that your bandwidth will not be used up.

Short and Nice Posts
You might be wondering why I am writing this long and I am guiding you not to write this long. This is not a personal blog! People read personal blogs for fun and sometimes people with no blogs read blogs as well. I suspect these people won’t stay long on your blog and the best way to capture their heart is to post something short and nice.

Don’t Do Everything Your Way
I know that personal blog should have everything about you, your thoughts and your daily lives but not everything can be done in our way. Our thoughts might be opposite of what others want. When you comment or post something, hold yourself from getting radical. Don’t get yourself into trouble by becoming a blogging criminal which might get you into trouble.

Being Pretty or Handsome

Zac Efron and Vanesa Hudgens

I don’t have much to comment on this. Handsome men and pretty girls often get all the traffic in the personal blog world. This is common sense at work. I know some might not have the outer characteristics to be in the category, you can always impress others with contents, blog design and your personality. “Cool” perhaps?

I am done with my long list of 20 Tips For A Personal Blog Success. If you want to revise or read more on this, you can hop over to Part 1 of 20 Tips For A Personal Blog Success. I hope you like it. Do you have anything more to add in? Are you going to try some of these tips out? Tell me about it!
