Blogger To Wordpress: Keep Your Link Juice

by Wayne Liew on January 30, 2008

If you have followed my contents since I started blogging or you have read About Wayne Liew, you should know that I started blogging on Blogger, the free blogging platform owned by Google.

I am lucky because my aim is to start a brand new blog without having any transfer fuss. Of course, losing all the backlinks that my old PR5 Blogger blog is a huge sacrifice but life goes on and this blog is actually on a Google PR4 now. However, things might be easier if the value of the links from my old Blogger blog can be passed on to Wayne Liew Dot Com.

Problogger Uses Wordpress

When a blogger is more devoted to a blog, there is a high chance that he/she will consider to host his/her blog on self-hosted Wordpress. Transferring your blog posts and comments are taught to you in the Wordpress codex but what if you want to redirect every permalinks of your blog posts on your old Blogger blog to this the posts on your new blog which are just transferred?

Blogger Redirector Wordpress Plugin To The Rescue

Blogger Redirector is a new Wordpress plugin that I have just discovered. This plugin applies a simple HTTP301 redirect on all the permalinks that your old Blogger blog has and any requests on the old permalinks will be redirected to the transferred posts URL on your new self-hosted Wordpress blog.

With this plugin, all HTTP301 redirection done will not only help regaining visitors, such as those from search engines that might not know that you have moved your blog, the link juice that you have received with your old blog will be passed on to your new blog as well.

Also, for those who wanted to cease the operations of their Blogger blog and discard all the remaining contents, you can redirect all the requests and link juice to your Wordpress blog without having to keep the old contents. All the old permalink requests will be redirected to your Wordpress homepage.

No More Worries About Google Page Rank

Blogger to Wordpress No Problems

A HTTP301 redirect will pass on nearly everything, including link juice and even Google Page Rank! The creator of this plugin claimed the following:

I have heard that if the redirection is done using “HTTP 301 (Moved Permanently)”, most search engines will understand what’s going on, including the Google’s PageRank.

Also, if you want to read more about the relation of a HTTP301 redirect and Google Page Rank, proceed to the top part of Permanent Redirect With HTTP301 and you will know why a 301 redirect is good for passing Google Page Rank.

Your Thoughts On Blogger Redirection Plugin

Are you still blogging on a Blogger blog? With this plugin now available, will you be more motivated to transfer your blog to a self-hosted Wordpress blog?

Will you use this plugin to transfer link juice of your Blogger blog which has ceased its operations? If you already gave this plugin a tryout, share with me your opinions on it.

Hi Wayne

I used this approach with sciencetext.com, which started out life as a Blogspot blog with a PR3, it took about 4-5 months for the link lurv to transfer from the Blogspot site to the domain, but it settled upwards as a PR5 within another month after that. So, it definitely can work.

@ David
That is an amazing result. I should have consolidated my Page Rank with my once PR5 blog. However, it is back to PR0 for that blog now so nothing can be scrapped…

@ domin mercier
Cool. All the best with your new WP blog.

@ lasilasi
You should be able to start the permalinks of all your post with the new domain with Blogger. However, if you are thinking of hosting your blog independently (leave Blogger), you should purchase a host and a domain name, not a domain name alone.

If you are finding difficulty in adding your bought domain into Blogger, you can always read Blogger Custom Domain Help for guidance as I think I will not be writing a guide on that in these few days.

I wish I could somehow consolidate Sciencebase’s pagerank (couple of years ago it was a PR8, now it’s a PR7 homepage.

Thanks for pointing out this most useful plugin mate. It could really help those bloggers who have been blogging on blogger and are wanting to move to their own domain. This will surely make their transfer less painful.

@ David
Your Page Rank is truly amazing. You build them with just pure contents? How I wish I can get a PR5 at the moment.

@ Fahad
Yes. Some feel the pain of losing all the link juice but with this, they will transfer happily.

I wrote up a guide that takes into account forwarding the individual posts from your blogger account and everything you need to do to make that happen. It also in general just gets users from your old site to your new one in a happy way. For all you lost users that were like me just a few days ago, I highly recommend you take a look.

I have a question about this. If I do indeed decide to transfer my account, I am going to lose the posts I have made within the last 4 years?

I haven’t use any redirect plugin to my newly transfered blog. All the links are working fine, I decided to used blogger permalink. My problem now is how to redirect blogger archives. Does this plugin resolves my current problem?

Colleen, You will not lose your old post if you transfer your files. Redirect is the solution to that.

Hi Wayne,
Just stumbled into your blog when I was researched for redirecting my wordpress blog to a self-hosted wordpress blog. Wonder if you could give me some advices on this.

I am currently have a wordpress.com blog, and am planning to purchase a domain name with a different host, then install wordpress in there so I have more control of it (compared to wordpress.com blog). I noticed there is a Redirection Plugin, do you think it does the same job like the Blogger Redirection Plugin? So, I won’t lose my page rank?

Thanks for your help in advance ! Btw, great work here !

I cannot guarantee on that but if you see that if the plugin does a 301 permanent redirection. If so, it should be able to pass along Page Rank juice with no problems.

Actually, also, would you recommend transferring to wordpress.com? If so, how would I do that with that same requirements as stated above? Thanks again.
