The Wordpress blog released an article, “Preparing For 2.3″, which listed out all the stuffs that you can do prior to the 2.3 release tomorrow. I am very anxious for this as this will be the first time I am doing this but I think I am prepared for both these and my Progress Test, which will be on Monday to Thursday, starting from tomorrow as well. I will for sure try my best to upgrade Wayne Liew Dot Com tomorrow as early as possible.

I am focusing on plugins issue in this post as it will matters the most in every upgrades due to compatibility issues. Theme modification is expected to be done by me as well if I’ve decided to use the new tagging function offered in the 2.3 version. Please pray for me tomorrow if you see “Wayne Liew Dot Com is upgrading” when you are trying to visit me.

Plugins Issue
I don’t know whether you have noticed about a few changes, additions and removals done on my blog which is the effect of changes in my Wordpress plugins. My post “Prepare Your Plugins For 2.3 Upgrade” will direct you to the list of plugins compatibility (increased plugins) and clearly shown that plugins compatibility is extremely important in this big upgrade.

My plugins compatibility after the jump.

I have installed and upgraded these few new plugins which will increase the usability of my blog and they are all compatible with the new 2.3 Wordpress:

  • BackUpWordPress - This plugin will help me back up all my blog database and files before I proceed to my upgrade. As I warned and warned earlier, backing up your blog is extremely important in upgrading a blog.
  • Google XML Sitemaps - This is to allow site-maps to be generated for crawlings of search engines’ robots. The old version is not compatible but the new beta version is so I upgraded the 3.0b11 beta version.
  • Maintenance Mode - This plugin will tell you all that I am in the upgrading process to avoid to all to step into a renovation site. Insurance don’t cover these injuries you know? :-P
  • WP AJAX Edit Comments - This will be the tools for you all to edit your comments if you found spelling errors or typo errors after you have posted your comments. You can amend your name, e-mail address and your site URL as well.
  • SRG Clean Archives - I upgraded it to the latest 4.1 version which offers a better admin interface for better customisation and a moo.fx effects for my readers. Check my new “Archive” page out.

My plugins list is not completely compatible and for these plugins, I am worried about them after my upgrade. They are:

  • Subscribe To Comments - Where you can subscribe to the comments section in a post and whenever there’s a new comment, you will be notified by an e-mail.
  • My Avatars - This is the plugin that shows all the faces when you all voice up. This plugin is always late in terms of upgrading. I hope it will work because I like the faces of you all so much!

These are my plugins and of course I have not featured those that are not affected here because I still have a test tomorrow! Digest this first. If you have installed a plugin which is not on the compatible section, this doesn’t mean that it will not work, only those under the “conflicting” and “not working” sections are those which really can’t work.

For those who are thinking of “Why all this fuss?”, you should read “10 Things You Should Know About Wordpress 2.3″, which will tell you what are the new things included inside the 2.3 package and I can tell you that they are very attractive. Apart from the popular tagging function, what I like about it is that it will offer automatic plugins upgrade, which means that we don’t need to hop back to those plugins homepages to check for their upgrades any more!

Readers using an older version of Wordpress such as 2.1 or 1.5, I suggest you to upgrade your blog to previous “beg versions” before upgrading to 2.3. This is because a big leap forward is not recommended since there have been a lot of features added into the 2.3. Who wants to join me in upgrading our blogs tomorrow? Leave me a comment and let us all go up together!

If I succeeded my upgrade tomorrow, I will be very happy to help out those facing problems while upgrading or failed to upgrade. Although I am not an expert and this is just my first upgrade, I am more than willing to share with you what I know if you trust me. Try to “Contact Me” and leaving me a comment here.

You must always remember one thing, backup before you upgrade!
