6 Arts Of Commenting On Articles

by Wayne Liew on October 20, 2007

There’s a huge increase in blog comments in the blogosphere and comments are getting more important in the eyes of bloggers. The rise might also be due to the fact that many blogging gurus like Darren Rowse from Problogger.net (even if he is already a pro, he still hops around and leaves comments) which recommend that commenting on other blogs, either big or small, will bring some traffic for you.

The tips that I am going to share with you is how can you comment strategically to get attention for your comments and eventually get some clicks to your site.

The Art Of Commenting:

Relevance – This is always the important as to get your comment under the post is to make it relevant to the topic. Don’t ever think of spamming by saying “Hi!” and then placing a link below your comment. You will get nothing but getting a block for spamming and even an appeal letter to Akismet will not get you out of the spammer jail.

Stop Spamming

There’s no need for you to place a link in each and every one of your comment. First, you will get tired of typing it very fast! Second, do you realized that most of the blogs enable you to input your blog or site URL when you comment?

Length – I don’t know how effective this will work for you but comments that is three paragraphs long will get the attention of comment scroller, especially commenting in a popular blog. You will often stand out among others because of the length but of course, no craps but relevant words.

Interaction – When you comment on something, don’t speak to yourself, people are not there to read your comment! Interact with the author of the posts or other commentators to get their attention. You can start your comment by @ Wayne Liew if you want to direct your comment to me in other blogs.

Responding to replies onto your comments will also helps you to develop the personal touch among the community.

Frequency – Commenting frequently on a blog will get you more attention as people is seeing more of your comments around. Apart from that, I see an increase in the usage of the Top Commentators plugin which you can get your blog featured in a blog’s homepage to get extra traffic and backlinks by commenting a lot.

Reputation – When you want to use “commenting on others’ blog” as your marketing strategy, you should start commenting properly, as an information provider, as a doubt-cleaner, as a supporter or just as a spammer. This is important since when you start using this method around your niche, people will start seeing your comments everywhere and if your comments pose a certain quality, people will certainly try to bait for your comments.

Be personal – I guess you might have heard of some tips that you should comment using the keywords of your site like “Make Money Online” and “Best SEO Blog” and so on to help in your search engine optimization efforts. Although these comments might get attention from people who wanted to make money online and get some push in terms of search engine ranking for the keyword but as an commentator, you are voicing out YOUR views on the content, not Make Money Online’s views! Anyway, this marketing method is cheap for me.

Do you use commenting as a marketing tool for your blog? Do I left out something that you frequently use when commenting on others’ blogs? How hateful are you when you came across spam comments which their motives are just trying to put a link?

  • Putting your blog name as your name will help to pass on traffic to your blog, showing the blog is owned by you. However, having your own name can help building your reputation in commenting. It's all up to you on which to choose.
  • i drop a comment on topics i'm familiar with and when i've something to say. while doing so, i also put my blog as my name. not just a marketing but my reason is to state that i really own the blog and it is my representation in the blogosphere
  • Too long a comment may tire a reader, though not the site owner.
  • Well, it's true that commenting bring traffic  But for IMHO, most important things is to communicate and to build a possible relationship with that blogger. Blogging is not all about money, it's about communicating and learn from each other!

Always say something positive and constructive, LOL.

It's really a lot of work to comment if we just want some traffic:) That's why I rather comment on your blog rather then Darren blog.
  • @ Justin
Thanks for commenting on my blog. Actually, I find commenting is fun simply because I get to voice my views about something.

I have a thought that someone will read my thoughts although I know some comments will not be even bothered by people.

    @ keeyit
Yes, we must share out thoughts but if I think my thoughts are a little bit too radical, I will choose to contact the blogger myself.

    @ iznan
Yes, don't spam in comment section. Spam makes your blog cool (no visitors).
  • comment is one of the best way to attract people visiting your site or blog. but dont just abuse it....stay cool
  • wah.. my name is promoted by you in your blog lel.. hehe.. Thanks, smart boy !

Any way, I did comment on other blogs. But not always positive comments depends on post contents. I think just be yourself and shared your thought !
  • I'm a bad commenter because I rarely leave comments. I read many blogs and should start commenting more often. When I do happen to comment, I try to leave something that will either add to the discussion with the other commenters or get the author's attention by replying to his/her post.

I always think it's fun to read long comments. They make me feel like I've posted something worth talking about. I will definitely visit a commenter's blog if they write three paragraphs.

This was a wonderful post, and I will try to keep these things in mind as try my best to comment more often on blogs.
  • It's OK. Everyone has the freedom to choose...
  • While I normally read blogs on Google Reader, Commenting requires visiting the post and do it from there, so don't tend to do it unless the post is a very good one. To ensure that comment on my comment doesnot go unnoticed I also sometimes subscribe to Comment RSS feed as I done for Wayne's blog.
  • You're welcome Wayne,

and thanks for the invitation to feature my blog on your homepage. It's just that I don't feel that my blog is ready for active promotion yet. Also I don't think your readers and my target audience may be the same group either. I do appreciate the offer though. Thanks.
  • @ Lawrence Cheok
This comment you are replying now is following the rules I've outlined above and the only thing is the FREQUENCY. Thank you for making your first comment here.

You have a nice blog, why not feature it on my homepage to the world?

    @ Online Cash Flow
Thank you for the reply. I will take my time to read through thoroughly.

    @ Edward
Yes, this is why people comment - to get your attention onto their blogs. With this rule you are applying, you can actually reach out to a lot of visitors.
  • Cool... Thanks for your tips.
  • For me i will comment on other's blog if they commented on mine, & also after reading interesting/informative post
  • Hello Wayne!

  • Hi Wayne, nice tips on commenting.

I think the temptation to spam comments is just too great. When I first started reading others' blogs and commenting, the sheer number of blogs to read and comment is simply overwhelming. If I take 6 minutes to read and post a comment like what I am doing now, then I will need 1 hour to comment on 10 blogs. Such a thought is very daunting and hence some people just opted for the easy way out; a "hi, great blog" comment which doesn't really achieve much.

Nonetheless, I fully agree with your take about reputation; it is for this same reason that I post proper comments (like this one :) ). People wlll see and read your comments, it's like a personal branding. For such reason, I make it a point to contribute my views in proper comments.

Thanks for this post. It validates my belief that there is no shortcut in life.
  • Cool. I am sure many of your traffic will be from referrals right?
  • I comment in people's in regular basis. I just leave a comment when I read about the particular article~
  • Actually, I have the past record of spamming people but I guess it will be slowly buried with my new image now.
