10 Ways To Fill Up Blogging Idle Time [Part 1]

Mercury from Nothing Specific About MerDuriaN recently commented the following in my post “My Traffic Is Gone! My Blog Is Dying!” which inspired me of this post on what to do when you are having nothing to write and don’t know what to do to help raising the quality of your blog.

Nothing to do when you want your blog to be good is something that is impossible for me. I will share a list of 10 things that you can do when you think you are idle in your blogging.

Bloghopping
This is actually a great thing to do. There are nearly 100 million blogs out there and it is impossible for you to tell me that there is nothing to be visited. Visiting other blogs can make you relax, know what is happening out there and upgrade yourself with knowledge.

By applying the 6 Arts Of Commenting On Articles, signing in to your MyBlogLog account and start to bloghop can actually bring in lots of traffic! Do me a favor, try visiting 10 new blogs everyday, in the end you will have a long list of blogs which will keep you busy for sure. ;-)

Inspiration Point

Inspiration Seeking
You should try to do things that can give you blogging inspiration. Know what is the time where blogging ideas come to you the most. When you are not in blogging active mode, get yourself into the environment so that you will get some blogging inspiration. With this, you can get a draft of what your upcoming post will look like and plan where will be your blog’s next destination.

Learn Something New
Ask someone a question. Wayne Liew is always here for you. If anyone requested, I can give you part of my collection of blogging guides so that you all can improve yourself on blogging.

Apart from giving you the e-books and podcasts which I downloaded and bought over the years, I can provide assistance if there’s anything that you don’t understand. Finding someone like me is better than finding those big time experts who might not have time to respond to your questions that might sound simple to them, right?

I am also affiliated to Blog Mastermind Mentoring Service, you will only need to pay $77 per month an you will receive a lot tips, extras and personal guidance on how you can improve your blog or you can download a FREE e-book here!

Blog Improvement
I am sure most of the time when you blog, you are always publishing, publishing and publishing. This is what makes most of us not aware of our blog design and usability. Take some of your idle time, surf around theme sites or the list of plugins that you can install on your blog.

This can help introducing something new for your visitors rather than just depending on your contents to make them come back.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming
You claimed that you have nothing to blog about or today is not the day for you to post anything (due to blogging frequency) but you can actually plan for what is going to be featured on your blog tomorrow or two days after. I am sure longer time will allow you to produce an article with higher quality, right?

Start to brainstorm alone, get away from distractions, maybe you can consider taking a walk outside. Do you know that sitting in front of the computer whole day long can make our brain goes dumb?

Where’s the other five? Well, the list will continue in another post to avoid information overload. Meanwhile, think of what you can do during your idle time and share it with me so that I can add into my list. I hope I can add some tasks to your timetable now.

For those who want the e-books and podcasts, drop me a message here or leave me a comment so that I can get your mail address. Make sure you subscribe to my RSS Feed to be the first to know what the other 5 ways are.

  • You have two choices now. Start hosting your photos with Flickr so that you can have extra space every month.

If you think that Flickr doesn't give you much space, try to buy their Premium account or you might as well buy for a self-hosted domain. When you buy, be sure to read about what they offer, reviews and so on.

Good luck! You can come back to ask more questions any time!

If you want to improve your blogging go visit the more matured blog where you can learn how to write well and not to be hoodwinked by some new bloggers telling you fantastic stories about making money online. Copyblogger is a good example for you all to learn how to write well.

You got to think three-dimensionally and look deeper into blogs that appears more like snake-oil salesmen and check them out properly. Sorry no names mentioned but have eyes wide open.

Many local blogs especially those with make money online mentality are using "pump-up" stories of how well they are doing just to get you innocent newbies to visit them often, subscribe to them and dropping comments every other day when you read a new post even though sometimes it's just a silly post.

Just ask yourself: How can someone who has only blog for a few months become a blogging guru or expert in so short a time? How can a blog of a few months earn hundreds of Adsense dollars when there's hardly any worthwhile content on the blog? Where does the traffic come from when the Alexa ranking is over 1 or 2 million? And the Google PR is 0?

Well, of course, unless the person is a born genius like Einstein who knows the true secrets of blogging.
  • Firstly, I would like to thank you for listing my link in your article.
Actually most of the time I was invested at least 30 existed blogs where I usually visit (including here).

I agree with you that when there is nothing to blog, you can seek some inspiration from other unique blog. Now here is my question that I still quite blur on it.
When you seek for an inspiration, sometimes you will found several blogs having the same similar topics. Do you think your upcoming post is unique enough to attract visitors?
  • MerCuRy,

Why should you worry about what others wrote? Do you know what sets one blogger apart from the rest? PERSONALITY.

I've highlighted it many times in my guide and here's one of them http://www.goldfries.com/websites-blogging/choo...

What attracts people to a blog would be the author personality. :)
  • I do a fair bit of blog hopping, and when I do my traffic increases, but then I get lazy and it drops off. Consistency is the key!
  • Inspiration Seeking, Learning Something New and Blog Improvement are the ones that I have been doing since I first went idle. Bloghopping is what I just started recently, when I started to get less number of new posts to read on G-Reader. Brainstorming is where I think I am yet to learn. Posts for which I prepared for more than a week got a meager views while those I wrote casually are on top-5.

    Waiting for the other 5's
  • I think bloghopping is a good thing to improve on your own blog. You will learn what is the content that can set your blog distinct from other.
  • @ Edward
You should bloghopping more often. You might find out my second and third blog.

    @ lukxiufung
I have a lot of things to plan out as well and I am tripling my work now with two more new blogs. I can do it, I think you can as well (but I am not sure how working life is).

Planning your time, setting up a to-do list according to the priorities and stick to it is my key of finding time here.

    @ nickelblue
This is a new blog as well and have the worst PR ever, PR N/A and I am banned from Adsense. The only good thing that I have is having a 200k Alexa ranking but that is bad if compared to Copblogger.

I am trying not to go technical because of the reasons you have stated and you won't see any money making secrets by me showing off my stats. I guess working hard and sharing things made me earn the money and there is no need to show it out.

Thanks for your contributing views but I feel a bit sad when you mentioned Google PR and Adsense. Anyway, this blog is new to the blogosphere but not me though.

    @ Mercury
I am not saying about blogging on the same thing. Voice your views over it and of course don't blog about something like "What are the benefits of a Google new product?". Maybe you can find some post with more personal touch like blogging attitudes, funny happenings in other blogs and so on.

You can pay attention to places in blogs like the sidebar and the comments section and blog from there. There's no need to look at a post always.

Another thing, always brainstorm. Even you don't get an idea, keep on next time. When you thought of some small things, jot it down. Small bits will become the next big thing. My articles here are not produced in one day.

    @ goldfries
I agree with you here. Even with the same topic, a post can sound very different when it drops into the hands of different bloggers.

    @ Thomas Sinfield
Don't be lazy, every effort will make you returns!

    @ Jalaj
Brainstorming for an article will take a long time. As I explained to Mercury above, I hope you can learn something.

    @ thoughtworks
This is the key to it. You look and it and make your own difference, not copying like most of the people do.
  • I got it Wayne. Oh ya, just an information about banned from Google Adsense, try to register again after 3 months they will approve again. (I forgot when I read this article)
  • I have tried registering for don't know how many times. I read these articles before and I kept getting the "Getting you banned is at our discretion policy" e-mail.

I hate it! Anyway, thanks for that. To be honest, I am earning quite good with Adbrite (the only ad panel you see on my sidebar), this is why I don't regret getting banned by Google Adsense.
